We get it. Everyone’s talking about how great natural deodorant is, and you’re curious. Or maybe you’ve even tried some with less than exciting results. So you have questions. Do they all smell like granola? Why are crystals sometimes involved? Is any of this stuff not… weird? And oh, yeah: Is there one that even works?

We’ve had these questions too, and we’re happy to report we have some answers. (In order: No. Not with ours. Not really. And yes—ours does!) Indeed, our own disappointment with natural deodorants is why we started making our own—something that goes on smooth, smells amazing, and is seriously effective. Keep reading to find out what you need to know.

1. Deodorant is not antiperspirant.

Here’s the deal: When your underarm sweats, that sweat hits your underarm’s bacteria, which in turn creates underarm stink. (That’s the technical term: underarm stink.) You can fight the stink in one of two ways: 1, Stop the sweat; 2, Stop the bacteria.

Antiperspirant, true to its name, stops the sweat. It does this by blocking your pores with aluminum. If that sounds unnatural, that’s because it is. You’re supposed to sweat, just like you’re supposed to do all the other things you do to rid your body of waste. And let’s just say messing with a few million years of biological evolution may not be such a wise idea.

2. Natural deodorant is deodorant.

What do we mean by that? We mean that deodorant fights odor by attacking that underarm stink, de-odorizing your body. How? By using a proven clean active ingredient to neutralize the specific bacteria that causes malodor (leaving intact the rest of the biome under your arm) and replacing that malodor with a beautiful, yet subtle clean fragrance. Our stick is powered as well by natural ingredients like baking soda and organic arrowroot powder (to absorb wetness), and avocado butter and jojoba (for smoother application). And finally to take our deo to the next level, we’ve added 30mg of sustainably-sourced CBD oil to every stick to soothe skin—helpful for all, but especially if you’re sensitive to baking soda. All together, this creates a safer and better way to achieve the desired goal. (Which, again, is stopping underarm stink.)

And while our formula will absorb some perspiration, this won’t stop you from sweating. And that’s a good thing! But it will stop your sweat from stinking up the place, which is all you can really ask for, isn’t it?

3. There will be an adjustment period.

If you’ve been using antiperspirant, it will take some time for your body to clear out all that pore-clogging aluminum. How long? It depends, but it might be days or even weeks. It’s, well, the pits—but it’s part of the process of going clean. And for full disclosure: during this detox you’re going to stink using natural deodorant—ours or anyone else’s

Two ways to speed the process up: 1, Exercising, or otherwise encouraging your body to sweat a little bit more; 2, Skipping deodorant altogether for a few days so your pits can air out.

Rest assured, the adjustment period will end, and it will end beautifully for everyone involved.

4. You’re gonna smell so amazing.

And you’ll do it without the bad stuff in so many deodorants and antiperspirants. Bad stuff like:

Aluminum. Possible links to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s.⁣

Parabens. A chemical linked to hormone disruption, which in turn is linked to an increased possibility of breast cancer or reproductive toxicity.⁣

Phthalates. A common beauty product that has since been banned in products for kids due to its links to more diseases than we can include here.⁣

Sulfates. A skin irritant. There are also concerns that some sulfates are contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which has been known to be carcinogenic.⁣

In case it’s not clear: All of that stuff… stinks.
